“We are excited to play our last home group match in the Europa League against LASK, a team we have already faced this season and who more than proved to be worthy of our respect.”

“The reason I want to emphasize this right away is really straightforward: occasionally, people’s perceptions of one team or the other are shaped by the results. I can see this in one sense—football is a results-driven sport, after all—but from a manager’s standpoint, things are never that simple.

“We experienced enough pain and gained enough knowledge from our first game to understand the threat that LASK will present. We had to persevere, respond to falling behind, and figure out how to draw strength and confidence from our positive experiences. Nothing about this was simple. It was challenging work against a formidable team that has its own goals and objectives.

Before the game in Linz, we were well aware of LASK. We were aware of their exceptional stability as a team, as well as their understanding of the game and skill with the wings. They gave us a proper test even though we were aware of all of this and were ready for it.

I hereby extend a warm greeting to Thomas Sageder, his team, and the LASK players, officials, and supporters at Anfield, hoping they have pleasure in the occasion without going overboard! They are both our guests and our opponents, just like every other team that plays here. They will be treated with respect when they arrive and will leave with our best wishes for the future.

“Although I have stated from the beginning that it would not be like this and that every game we have played thus far has been a competition, I am aware that there was an expectation that we would breeze through this competition, beginning with the group stage.

“The most recent one was particularly challenging, and our loss to Toulouse served as yet another example of what can happen if you are not performing at this level, not that it was necessary.

“We had a difficult night, but we responded to it in a way that was essentially exactly what I was hoping for, as we saw in our two extremely successful games against Brentford and Man City. We include that form into this fixture in the hopes that we can build upon it going forward and continue our process of evolving as a team and making the required improvements.

As I have previously stated, one of the things that I truly enjoy about this squad is how much I like how it is progressing while also realizing that there is still a great deal of room for development. It makes perfect sense that this is the case because the adventure we are on only started in the summer and the end is still far off.

We will keep moving in the correct direction with each game, each challenging circumstance we face, and each lesson we take away. We will accomplish this as a team, with the support of our fans, and by working together.

“The challenge is still to continue the good work that has already been done, regardless of who is chosen [to play tonight].

“We knew going into the season that every member of the team, including the players, would need to stand up when called upon, and this is especially true during a stretch of games that we will have a lot of.

“As always, we’ll accomplish this as a team, with each person contributing to the Liverpool collective. Not only is this the ideal approach, but it is the only one. I hope it turns out well enough tonight.
