When it was announced that Jurgen Klopp will be leaving his old club at the end of the season, former Liverpool player Naby Keita said he had “tears in his eyes.”
The Guinean signed a contract with Werder Bremen and left the Reds in the summer to return to the Bundesliga. Although Keita was a member of the teams that won the Premier League and the Champions League, he had numerous injuries during his stay on Merseyside.
“I’m not on the (social media) networks but when they told me, I had tears in my eyes,” he stated to RMC Sport. “I think of him as my dad, and he took me to Liverpool as his son. For the rest of his life, I hope the best for him.
“I’ll attempt to write him later. I met him by chance, but that’s life, and I wasn’t let down. We received awards.”
One of the first Liverpool players to comment on the shocking news was Virgil van Dijk. While Andy Robertson expressed his amazement at Klopp’s decision, pointing out that the successful manager wouldn’t do something ‘rash’, the Dutchman acknowledged that it was difficult to accept his approaching departure.
