Mason Greenwood: Getafe coach retreats on transfer brag as sick shouts at Man Utd loanee’s debut face enquiry

LaLiga officials will launch an investigation into the conduct of Osasuna fans after some of them were overheard yelling nasty slogans towards Mason Greenwood, a Manchester United loanee, during his Getafe debut on Sunday.

Mason Greenwood: Getafe coach retreats on transfer brag as sick shouts at Man Utd loanee’s debut face enquiry

When United decided it would be difficult for the controversial attacker, 21, to continue his career at Old Trafford, they sent him on season-long loan with Getafe, the third-tier team in Madrid. The decision was made following a surge of protests that prevented them from reintegrating Greenwood into their first team despite the Crown Prosecution Service’s decision to abandon their major criminal case against him.

Greenwood and his partner have been welcomed with open arms by Getafe, and the player’s partner Harriet Robson has also been well embraced at the Spanish club, even though his long-term future is still uncertain.

There is already speculation that Greenwood, one of LaLiga’s weakest and least-supported teams, could be the 40-year-old club’s GOAT.

It came as no surprise to see Greenwood make his Getafe debut as a substitute in Sunday’s 3-2 victory over Osasuna at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez, despite the fact that he hadn’t played professional football for about 20 months before his arrest in January 2022.

The LaLiga team’s head coach, Jose Bordalas, tried his best before the match to dispel rumors that the forward from Bradford would play.

Nevertheless, Greenwood did participate in a crucial 3-2 victory by coming off the bench in the 77th minute.

His good looks were marred by some foul cries from the traveling fans, who could be heard yelling “Mason Greenwood, die” from the visitors’ section.

The Athletic reports that a LaLiga investigation into the chanting has been launched after match officials overheard them. A disciplinary procedure is now expected to follow.

Jogoba Arrasate, the head coach of Osasuna, also denounced the taunts directed at the 21-year-old player, who intends to repair his career and reputation during his season-long loan in Spain.

To do this, Greenwood got off to a strong start by winning the corner that resulted in Nemanja Maksimovic’s winning goal for Getafe.

LaLiga officials, on the other hand, disapprove of the offensive chanting, and an investigation is currently under way.

Arrasate reflected on the chanting and stated: “The chants of ‘**** Osasuna’ and ‘anti-Greenwood’ were both quite unpleasant.

He is a player whose fate was ultimately decided by the legal system. He plays the game really well. But if we discuss chants, we ought to discuss all of them, not just a few.

Coach Bordalas of Getafe, on the other hand, says he was ecstatic about Greenwood’s appearance off the bench.

“We are not a part of what happened or what people are saying. We can only discuss sporting topics, like I stated during the Real Madrid game, and we’re content there. We believe that this loan period is advantageous for him, Getafe, and football as a whole,” he remarked.

He’s taken us by surprise, which is good. It was a challenging game today that was quite close. He supported us both offensively and defensively. He supported his team admirably and [physically] shocked us.

The Getafe coach does a U-turn for Mason Greenwood.

“We are still working with him, as he hasn’t played in many months,” he continued. This will be discussed gently. I imagine that today will be memorable for him and that he will enjoy feeling like a football player once more. A football player wants to play and compete.

I solely discuss sports-related topics. Because he is a fantastic player, what I am carrying with me today is the expectation of the supporters. We are content with him. Considering how brief his stay has been, he has adapted nicely. His conduct has been excellent.

Bordalas was had to retract earlier statements he had made, according to which Jude Bellingham of Real Madrid had been instrumental in persuading Greenwood to join Getafe.

However, it’s believed that Bellingham’s camp is upset over the remark, which led Bordalas to repudiate the assertion.

Bordalas expressed his regret by saying: “I wanted to clear up a misunderstanding there has been. I claimed that Mason Greenwood communicated with Bellingham before traveling to Getafe.

“I have been made aware that this was not the case, it has been said. I am sorry. Mason arrived in a distinctive manner. We were really interested when they offered him to me because it was in our best interests. It was not done with evil intent, I just wanted to make it clear.

With games against Real Sociedad on Sunday and Athletic Bilbao the following week, Greenwood will keep improving his fitness and hopes to play a part when Getafe are next in action.
