Steelers GM Omar Khan Gets Credit And Solid Ranking Among NFL Peers: Pittsburgh Tracker

MAY 29 OMAR RANKED He’s the No. 19 GM in the NFL, according to one ranking effort … but maybe it’s “Omar Khan of the Steelers with a bullet.”

NBC Sports’ Patrick Daugherty has ranked the 32 general managers in the NFL … and he’s got Khan with more credit than blame.

NBC writes, “He’s already made one great quarterback decision: Cutting his losses with Kenny Pickett … shipped out for a bag of footballs while Russell Wilson and Justin Fields have been brought in on the cheap to try to create some semblance of post-Roethlisberger momentum.”

The source continues, “It’s never easy, but Khan’s initial weathering of someone else’s quarterback bust suggests it won’t be as bad as it could have been.” We’ll buy it, but what about the “what have you done lately” business? If this QB switch fails, Khan will not be ranked as highly the following time around. MAY 29 – THE END OF OTAS? The Pittsburgh Steelers are two weeks into Organized Team Activities, one step closer to the start of training camp. However, might this be the last time the league holds OTAs?

According to NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero, the NFL Players Association is in the midst of reaching an agreement with the league to eliminate voluntary spring OTAs.

“The NFL Players Association is working to formalize a proposal to alter the offseason beginning in 2025, eliminating voluntary on-field work in the spring in favor of a longer training camp ramp-up, with players reporting in mid-June to early July, according to sources,” Pelissero writes.

Obviously, this would be a significant alteration in the NFL offseason calendar, as the “ramp up” to training camp would be abolished.

Following the conclusion of the practice Tuesday, the Steelers released some photos from their first practice of Week 2.

MAY 28 – BENGALS MISSING WRs – The division rival Cincinnati Bengals bean their second wave of OTAs today and two key cogs to the offense were noticeably absent.

Reports indicate that wideouts Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins are not in attendance.

MAY 28 – WATSON’S PROBLEM? – As Deshaun Watson enters his third season with the Pittsburgh Steelers’ rival Cleveland Browns, there are questions about not only whether he can stay healthy but also return to the level of play he exhibited with the Houston Texans.

In the 12 games across two seasons that Watson has played for the Browns, his completion percentage has dropped drastically from where it was in Houston, and his interception percentage has risen. So what has been his problem?

Well, in a recent appearance on the Dawg Check podcast, former NFL receiver Cecil Shorts III believes Watson’s problem is mental.

“I think a lot of it is mental for him. When you look at him play, one of his last games was against the Indianapolis Colts, and when you looked at him play in that game he was forcing things. He was trying to force the big play, …” Shorts said. “It’s like, dude, you were good in Houston because you let the game come to you. You went through your progression; you took your time. If it wasn’t there, you used your feet to get out of the pocket. You hit your checkdowns. You didn’t have to force anything.”
