Liverpool wants to sign “possibly the best midfielder in the world,” while Chelsea, a Premier League opponent, is vying with Liverpool for Inter Milan player Hakan Calhanoglu.

After a summer of upheaval at Anfield, there have undoubtedly been more positive than negative developments, but Saturday’s fortunate victory over Crystal Palace with the help of VAR served as a reminder of how much work remains.

The trio of Ryan Gravenberch, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Alexis Mac Allister, who were instrumental in the thrilling 4-3 triumph against Fulham just six days prior, did not have the same level of impact at Selhurst Park.

Along with connections to Andre Trindade, Joao Palhinha, and Kalvin Phillips, the rumors about Hakan Calhanoglu also imply that Liverpool is continuing to build their midfield, although it is not yet finished.

Liverpool and Hakan Calhanoglu were connected.

Anfield is reportedly interested in Inter’s former AC Milan player, according to Tuttosport. The main man spearheading Inter’s most recent Scudetto drive is Calhanoglu, who controversially switched from one San Siro behemoth to the other back in 2021. He provides the ammo for the scorching forward tandem of Marcus Thuram and Lautaro Martinez.

“I think that (Calhanoglu) is the best midfield player in Italy right now,” Vincenzo Montella, the 29-year-old’s Turkey coach, said to Football Italia. “And possibly the world’s best.”

Granted, this is high praise, but Montella has some valid points in his remarks.

“World’s best”

Calhanoglu is developing in Italy like a beautiful wine. He once scored a 45-yard free kick against Jurgen Klopp’s Borussia Dortmund when playing for Hamburg. Having scored eight goals in all competitions so far this season, he set Inter up for a 3-0 thumping of the defending Serie A winners Napoli last week with the kind of viciously hit volley that Steven Gerrard used to be known for.

Liverpool would have a difficult time persuading Inter to sell given that they have a deal that expires in 2027. Recently, the Nerazzuri rejected several high-profile offers from teams in the Middle East.
