When Matip, Virgil van Dijk, and Joe Gomez all sustained critical injuries during the 2020–21 season, Phillips famously assisted Liverpool in qualifying for the Champions League. As part of Klopp’s back line, the 26-year-old and Rhys Williams had a fantastic partnership.

However, Phillips found it difficult to play following that season and signed a loan with Celtic in August. The transfer hasn’t gone as expected; Phillips is largely benched and finds it difficult to win over the supporters. On Sunday, he began their 2-1 loss against Kilmarnock.

 

In January, Liverpool will decide whether to bring Phillips back to Merseyside. Recalling Williams from his Aberdeen loan period is an additional choice. With the 22-year-old playing just 90 minutes of football this season, that transfer hasn’t worked out either.

 

Given the fitness of Gomez, Ibrahima Konate, and Van Dijk, Liverpool still has a lot of choices at center defense. Additionally, supporters would adore seeing Jarell Quansah get some playing time.

 

However, it would be prudent to bring back Phillips or Williams because an injury crisis could arise at any time. The two players’ difficult loan transfers and Liverpool’s participation in numerous competitions may perhaps make them want to return to Merseyside.
